Miso crafty: Austin Handmade Bash + Cupcake Smackdown

Seeing as how this starts in, oh, an hour (!), I'm a little late in posting this. No matter.

My girl Candace of Electric Promotions has organized the out-of-control (in a good way) All Austin All Handmade Bash, and it looks SO FUN. Music...a fashion show....on-site crafts....a photo booth?? Quel fabuleux. And, entry only $2! Count me in.

I plan to swing by right after R. and I stuff our faces on this or this. Or possibly this. (Just kidding). Details for the All Austin All Handmade Bash here.

Speaking of stuffing face. I got to meet Jennie Chen of MisoHungry fame at the Austin Bleet-Up last Wednesday - where she brought some of her insane cupcakes, the chocolate bacon beer variety! - and we discussed blogging/event planning. Well check out this shindig: The Cupcake Smackdown! It's tomorrow starting at 4pm, and I plan to be there, camera in tow.

This happens at One2One Bar tomorrow, and in addition to a people-eating cupcake contest (heh. You know what I mean but alternative is funny!), there will also be a dog-eating cupcake contest too. Kristen Owen of Do512 is a judge! Details here.

What else is everyone up to this weekend? May fit in 500 Days of Summer if time allows. Freaking move to Austin, Zooey Deschanel.

Le Maiden Voyage: The Austin Bleet-Up!

Oh hai, it's me!

So confession. I have been walking around all day long with a dopey cartoon grin on my face, because I was SO thrilled about how last night turned out. I got to meet the most interesting people at the Austin Bleet-Up! Music gurus, fashionistas, foodies, one man documenting his year of free pizza from Home Slice, this amazing t-shirt design shop / blog, South Side Sanctuary. FOR SERIOUS, you guys put this blogger to shame! I am so impressed with the creativity and talent out there!

The always lovely Michael Barnes stopped by and snapped a few photos, and well-prepared, camera-ready bloggers like Lani Rosales and Texas Betsy took pics as well. For me, the whole thing was like a blogger candy store, running around to each different face saying, "you blog about fusion cupcakes? Dude." "Whoa - you blog about guerilla painting?" "Shut the f-- up, you blog for Ben Kweller?" And still, there were tons of bloggers I did not meet, which only makes me excited for the next time we do this.

Of course it was also nice to clink glasses with old pals, too. Cory Ryan - our AMAZING event photographer - has now posted her photo booth album from last night on Flickr. Early-ish on in the night, the lovely Tiffany Diane from Austin is Burning and Amber Deitrich (who encouraged us to do this whole thing at TRIO!) of AmberDemure joined me in blowing bubbles!

Jake Holt - another badass Austin photog - is looking quite pimp here.

I believe I wandered off at this point.

John Gross of Party Ends and his incredibly lovely lady, Emily...

Texas Betsy - CLEVER!

My awesome editor Tom Vale from The Deli!:

Oh........hold up. Someone call a fire truck 'cause it just got haute.

That would be Gary Gaston and Andrew Rutkowski of birthday party pinata fame, as well as new friend Andrew Greene, who shall heretofore be known to me as "Google." (He works for Google.)

The Better Than The Van guys, making their aristocratic faces!

Amanda Garcia and Rose Reyes, Austin music czar and role model to me in more ways than one:

Matt Swinney, who just got finished throwing Austin Fashion Week:

Nicole Carbon, of Fabulous Drinks Austin (this pic is so freaking ADORABLE):

Lyssa from This is Life in Austin and her cute visiting pal:

Pink Sun Drops!:

Event-planning and publicity phenoms, Candace Carlisle of Electric Promotions and Claudia Blanchette of Giant Noise, as well as Kim Sae-Eua, who was featured in the Statesman yesterday!

I LERVE this picture. Do512's Kristin Owen, Amanda Louie, Lawrence of Covert Curiosity and Aaron Robert Hall:

Indiana Adams (coolest name ever?) of Adored Austin plus husband:

Laura Dobberstein and the EatDrinkAustin crew (Liz Groh, Wade Treichler, and Breanna Rollings, my colleague / pal / also of OneLegAtATime fame!):

At some point I stumbled back....significantly tipsier

Am a huggy drunk.

That's Zoe Cordes Selbin by the way, who will essentially be running this town in a few years. Girlfriend isn't out of school yet, and has interned for Giant Noise, Transmission Entertainment, and is about to start up with C3! (Correct me if I got that order wrong, Zoe!) Oh, and her father is one of the most beloved professors at my alma mater, Southwestern. (Don't make fun of me for hyperlinking my college).

Next, grabbed R. ("Husband of Blogger"):

And then, Rene! I think we are performing a magic trick here:

I'll leave you with just a few more goodies:

Peter from FoodingBlog, and Tasha and Hans from RushMonkeys:

And one non-booth shot, so you can see the lay of the Bleet-Up land. A million thanks are owed to TRIO of Four Seasons, who made this little idea a reality:

FINIS!

JK's Wedding Entrance Dance = Day MADE.

This doesn't have anything to do with Austin, except for the fact that I think Jill and Kevin should move here:

In a few weeks, this video has garnered over 12,000,000 views on YouTube, and has made the rounds to traditional media as well - like the TODAY show.

Omigod! Don't you want ALL of these people to be your best friends??

Have to stop watching this video - currently at work, crying on laptop, causing scene in general.

Thank you, Austin American-Statesman and Daily Texan!

I forgot to talk about this, but Daily Texan ran a story on Austin bloggers this month, and they were so kind as to mention Austin Eavesdropper! The lovely Leigh Patterson wrote this piece, and the girl bloggers featured in the story grabbed a snapshot together after the shoot.

Note face-devouring sunglasses designed to effectively block out UVA, UVB, alpha, gamma, and even additional types of sun rays yet undiscovered by man. We endorse eye protection on Austin Eavesdropper.

From left to right, that is Maggie from Maggie's Austin, Tiffany Diane from Austin is Burning, moi, Leigh Patterson, and Sarah Dean from The Year of Living Thriftily. The wonderful boys of Ultra8201 took this picture (and they were also in the Daily Texan story).

And then yesterday, the Statesman included Austin Eavesdropper on their list of Central Texas' top blogs! Thank you, newspaper! I high-fived the laptop screen when I saw that.

Lastly, thank you out there reading this post right now....whoever you are!

Where the blogger party at? TRIO this Wednesday

YEE-HAW!

We are booked to capacity with this event, but for our esteemed attendees I thought I'd give you a reason to show up early (besides breaking open the champagne bottle with yours truly).

The first 50 arrivals at The Austin Bleet-Up will receive little goodie bags filled with spa samplers, music, coupons to local businesses and other Austin-y stuff. TRIO has kindly donated many of the spa treats, while local musicians, artists, and other creative types have thrown in their contributions.

So get there at 6pm fools, and claim a magical bag! Parking is complimentary valet because we are Fancy People.

To see what else we'll have going on at the Bleet-Up, just click here.

UPDATE: Attendees, when you arrive...hang onto that valet ticket. You can have it validated at the host stand.

It also occurred to us that a lot of you may not have been to TRIO before. When you walk inside the main entrance of Four Seasons, turn left and head to the staircase. Descend down and boom, you are in TRIO.

Remember to bring $ if you'd like half-off wines by the glass, and also remember to bring your special blogger social skills. Sometimes Austin Eavesdropper has to remind herself to say the words "by the way" and not "btw" so as not to annoy people, and "talk to you later" rather than "Tweet you later." She will indeed be drinking so if she says these things to you anyway, apologies are submitted in advance.

Nirvana Nostalgia.

God. Remember when MTV was kind of cool?

I miss these days.

We were at a friend's lakehouse this weekend, listening to a '90s station on XM or something, and I got so freaking nostalgic for junior high. Or, more accurately, the larger cultural zeitgeist of the early-to-mid-90s when I was in junior high. (I'll leave behind the horrifying OXY zit cream, thanks).

I think the reason Alamo Drafthouse hasn't had a Nirvana singalong (to my knowledge), even though we totally know all the words is because we can't laugh about it.

Did you know, though, that Nirvana recorded a bootleg here in Austin in 1991?

I go back and forth about my favorite Nirvana song, but I always come back to All Apologies.

In terms of music video alone though, In Bloom is pretty sweet. I can't decide. Which one's your favorite?

Brazilian Girls: A MySpace page so hip, it'll make you cry

There are few MySpace pages as aesthetically-pleasing as Brazilian Girls' MySpace page, no?

Brazilian Girls came to our fair city in 2006 for ACL, and I really want them to come back. Especially after watching videos like these:

In the meantime, several other Treasure Island kids are coming to ACL this year, like Girl Talk and Passion Pit.

Maybe we can convince Eddie Vedder to steal Sabina Sciubba's pretty white dress, and hold it ransom until Brazilian Girls come to Austin?? I bet he'd be into it.

Countdown to ACL 2009: Dr. Dog

Who doesn't love Dr. Dog? In sound alone, they are like the 21st century's answer to The Beatles.

Dr. Dog My Old Ways

Dr. Dog will be playing this year at ACL on Friday, October 2. I remember seeing them at ACL last year, and falling quite hard for their version of Heart of Races.

Doesn't that video put you in a wonderful mood? And make you want to prance around in homemade masks?

More things that put me in a wonderful mood:

1. Cupcake smackdowns.
2. thisiswhyyourefat.com
3. Watching old My So-Called Life clips.
4. This news story.
5. Chocolate (duh). While on period (double-duh).

Austin Fashion Awards ROUND-UP

I've had basically three thoughts today.

A) I adore Lloyd on Entourage.

B) My husband is amazing. Last night in a dream, he saved me from a creature that was hissing at me from inside our bathtub: an unholy genetic union of Snake and Zebra. Literally my least favorite and most favorite animals combined (and a "znake" as we later christened it). It was humongous like a sandworm from Beetlejuice, and GRINNING at me while it was hissing, delighting in my fear this sick and twisted creature. So R. - being quite manly and capable - grabbed it, ran to the front door, and drop-kicked it into the street!

I felt a little bad because here was blatant animal abuse, occurring right inside my dream. But I also felt relieved that that thing was out of the damn house. And I also know that were this scenario to happen in real life, R. would behave as heroically as he did inside my brain.

C) So very, VERY proud of my girl Rene who won Critic's Choice Best Local Fashion Designer last night at the Austin Fashion Awards!!! Check out the full list of winners - which also includes photographer extraordinaire Cory Ryan and Broken Ear Productions - here!

Michael Barnes at the Statesman was very kind to take Rene and I's picture, with both of us wearing her original creations! Here are some more pics below from the evening...

Rene and I on red carpet, courtesy of Jake Holt Photography (who took GORGEOUS shots of everyone, see full gallery here).

Here is one more from Jake. One of my very favorite couples, Cory Ryan and Tom Hudson - bassist and drummer in Hollywood Gossip! And so very much more.

How insanely pretty is she.

A very fuzzy shot of Rene winning her Golden Boot:

The two of us holding a kryptonite-like substance at the AMLI After Party (what is this stuff??)

Hats off Matt Swinney, and the legions of people who made Austin's first Fashion Week happen!

But - before we close. It must be said that one of the celebrity attendees of the night, Kayne of Project Runway Season 3, is truly one of the sweetest men I have ever met. With absolutely flawless skin. Even high-res photography cannot do this complexion justice.

FINIS!
