See, WHO you are does matter because I actually DO CARE (I can't speak for Taylor, but I'll bet he does too) about what you think and whether you're happy or not.

Fair enough that you didn't name names, BUT, it's clear who the owner(s) of Rare are/were. So, by saying Rare is poorly run (my words, not yours), certainly feels like an attack on either myself and/or Taylor (again, not speaking for Taylor).

Look, I'm assuming you're either a past (or current) advertiser, writer or photographer, correct? Lord knows Austin is a VERY small town, so yeah, I'd like to know who I've left "disgruntled" out there. Trust me, I knew there would be fallout when I sold my share of the company. I just hoped that those that were "disgruntled" would have the decency to look me in the eye and tell me they weren't happy. I'm not saying I can do much about it, but having an adult conversation not in the public realm seems more appropriate to me.

My point was, if you CHOOSE to make this a public issue, then stand behind it by telling everyone who you are. If you CHOOSE to make it a private issue, then contact me (or, I'm assuming Taylor if that's your beef) directly. Why is that asking too much?

You mention the Yelp reviews. There have been exactly TWO reviews since I left the magazine. One incredibly bad and one incredibly good (at least for the current staff of Rare). So, seems a mixed bag to me. Additionally, the difference between those yelp reviews and you is that at least those Yelpers put a name on it. If I wanted to, I (or Taylor or anyone else) could contact them directly. You don't even give me (or Taylor) that option.

Finally, (and then I'll shut up for the vast majority of you who couldn't care less about this) you do point out some why's about your being disgruntled. Don't get me wrong -- you're absolutely entitled to your own opinion, BUT you make vast generalizations that may or may not be true for others. Not to mention, some of your assertions simply aren't true (Rare doesn't pay contributors -- do you KNOW that to be true because it may just depend on the contributor. AND, you make a pretty bold assertion about "scraping together enough coin to throw a party for your friends" -- man, I wish I could call 1500 people "friends" -- and there sure are a lot of businesses that think that's a good idea when we/they could generate that kind of traffic -- and god forbid Rare did something that just allowed people to have a good time). If we/they DIDN'T throw those parties, you'd be questioning what we/they are doing in the community to get people out off the couch. Oh well, guess you win some and lose some on that idea...

I'm not posting again. Hell, it's not even my magazine anymore. Your call "anonymous." You gonna step up or keep laying in the weeds?

Matt Swinneymatt swinneynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780795730939193102.post-67624308105847353952009-06-23T01:30:39.956-05:002009-06-23T01:30:39.956-05:00Mr. Swinney,
I am not sure how you or Mr. Perki...Mr. Swinney,

I am not sure how you or Mr. Perkins can be "called out" when no names are mentioned. As for my posting anonymous, I prefer to not let the messenger get in the way of the message.

There are many disgruntled people left in the wake of Rare. Who they are is less important than why. I noted a few why's. For others... well there's always the Yelp reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/rare-magazine-austin and I'm sure plenty of advertisers and contributors have thoughts.

I believe in what goes around comes around, so I'll refrain from attacking the messenger myself. But - one can only hope Mr. Perkins is more aware.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780795730939193102.post-27326311395464780772009-06-22T16:43:34.239-05:002009-06-22T16:43:34.239-05:00Couple of quick comments:

Even though I'm not involved anymore, I really do wish Taylor the best of luck with everything and Tolly, your words are WAY too kind. Thank you for your support of myself, Carrie and Taylor through this process.

2) On a less happy note: Taylor was too nice to say it, but I'm not. The internet is such a great thing that people can post snarky comments all the while calling themselves "anonymous." So, "Anonymous" why don't you reveal yourself at least to me personally if you can't do it in public? It's not cool to call myself and/or Taylor out, but not have the guts to tell us who you are. At least Taylor, Carrie, myself and the entire Rare staff (freelancers included) have always been willing to put our name on something whether you personally like it or not.

So, if you have the guts, email me directly at matt at launch787.com.

Matt Swinneymatt swinneynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780795730939193102.post-16996440013580585882009-06-22T00:01:43.320-05:002009-06-22T00:01:43.320-05:00For all you Rare readers out there, Tolly included...For all you Rare readers out there, Tolly included, I want to thank you for being concerned about where Rare is heading and what is going to happen with it. I could not be happier with the following that Rare has, and its because of readers like you guys that it will continue to come out each month.
Worry not, the changes that are going to be happening with Rare are all good. We are planning on improving our editorial content, diversifying the designers to enrich the content in each issue each month, and doing some fun stuff with different aspects of the production that I'm sure all of you will really enjoy.
We plan on increasing our event staff to really bring Austin some great events through Rare, and to answer Anonymous's comments: we already do give our advertisers value, and like any business, not all of the decisions that we have made have been good ones. We learn from what works and what doesn't work, and we evolve, not unlike this particular industry is right now. As to going monthly it has been a very positive decision with positive results not only for us, but for businesses that have participated in Rare for theirs.

WE are very excited about where Rare is heading, and I am an open book for suggestion if any of you have anything you would like to see changed in or with Rare. Email me at info@rareaustin.com with any comments or suggestions..I read everything that comes in and take all of it to heart.

Again, thanks to Tolly and thanks to all of you for your support. We look forward to bringing you many more issues of exciting Rare's to read and enjoy. :)perkinaustinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03310772292850754556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780795730939193102.post-28662447956893859442009-06-19T19:36:37.926-05:002009-06-19T19:36:37.926-05:00Hey Anonymous, thanks for stopping by. "exposure" is what they say. Can't pay your bills with credit lines...

Gotta love a business based around scraping together enough coin to throw a party for your friends... but really how long do you expect that to last, eventually people want a real return on their investment.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780795730939193102.post-14205233113400578422009-06-19T15:31:43.090-05:002009-06-19T15:31:43.090-05:00Happy hour it is!
