ann richards.
I know we don't really talk about politics at all - if ever - on Austin Eavesdropper, but lately I've been thinking about my poor municipal voting record, and wanted a little inspiration, since elections are coming up in November.
So I'm calling on the spirit of Ann, one of my favorite Texas governors. In a few weeks (September 1), it will be her birthday.
If you are a Republican and didn't care for Ann's politics, well, I'm sorry. In truth, when she was in office, I was too young to really understand what she was all about.
But I DID know that my whole family loved her, and I did think it was awesome that someone who looked almost exactly like my grandmother had such an important job. So when I got older, I learned more about ol' Ann.
Did you know that:
* Out of 40+ governors from Texas, Ann is one of two women to ever have held the post.
* Before she was governor, she was a social studies and history teacher.
* She was a movie lover, and helped created the Texas Film Hall of Fame.
* She made a "no talking" film trailer for the Alamo Drafthouse with my friends!
(The annoyed guy in the red cap is my roomate, Caleb, and the other, annoyING guy in a red cap is our buddy Rob).
But one of the best things about Ann Richards? Surely her sass.
"I get a lot of cracks about my hair, mostly from men who don't have any."
I think it's safe to call that an "oh snap," don't you?
Miss your fiery spirit, Ann. Happy almost birthday!

Because I am neurotic, I fear the title of this post SHOULD (in terms of correct grammar) have been:
"You know whom I miss?"
But that sounds so awkward and wrong.
Help a girl out? Dad? Are you there to answer this one?
I don't know the answer to that question Tolly, but I also miss Ann, not to mention Molly Ivins.
We've got some cool broads here in Texas, don't we?
That video is priceless.
@Marie - Good call with Molly Ivins, Marie.
@Le Tigre - RIGHT. I love how she picks up the phone and says, "Oh. This *is* important."
I'm kind of guilty of being *that* person. I'm always in the back whispering, "OMG did you see that!?" or "Wasn't that funny!? That Seth Rogen gets me every time!" *facepalm*
Ha! That video is great! What a pretty lady.
@Le Tigre - Haha me too. :) Am especially that way with my husband, who just patiently smiles...but he's probably thinking, "SHUT THE F UP"
@Hipstercrite - I know? That's what I was thinking, while I was posting this. That Ann Richards was a looker.
Ann Richards is the only politician I love more than Hillary Clinton, and I have an unhealthy obsession with HillBot. Something about strong women and pantsuits.
@Frank - Frank, I am so happy to hear you say that. Because I love Hillary too, and so many people - even Democrats and/or liberal people - JUST HATE HER. And I hear they're arguments. But after reading A Living History, I just sort of fell in love with her...and nobody can take that away!
PS - Word on strong women and pantsuits, and in Ann's case, a MOTORCYCLE!

My favorite Drafthouse "kick your ass out" video.
