Me and the moody flowers.

You all are probably sick of looking at my mug by now. But look!:
This is a pic I took with my relatively new Diana camera, which I'm crazy about. 

I accidentally double-exposed this picture when I took it. It was the day after I bought this strange little flower plant, which literally closes up its blossoms in the slightest amount shade, then bursts them back open again when it is receiving direct sun rays.

When I bought the plant, I carried it to my car, and walked through some shade. That was roughly 20 feet. 

Then, I drove exactly three blocks to my house. 

During this time, the blossoms were all, "oh hell no" and immediately closed up.

Because they spent a grueling four minutes without sunshine!

Can you believe a flower is that sensitive to light? You probably can, but this is my very first time to buy and attempt to take care of flowers. Isn't that sad?

Things are about to majorly turn around though here at Eavesdropper HQ. I am all UP in this grow-your-own-everything business. I mean, it's not Swiss Family Robinson at our place yet, but I'm determined to eat something I grow this year.

do you guys garden?

We were much more successful with our garden this year, although to be honest, we kinda lost steam oh.. about last week. I think next year I may attempt container gardening OR implement a soaker hose system.

We did have a very fruitful cherry tomato plant, a few cucumbers, a few larger tomatoes and a few zucchinis. But then I accidentally killed the zucchini plant. Whoops...

I have some beautiful flowers I've managed to keep alive in front of our house. My secret? Watering almost every day! And plucking off the dead flowers. Aside from that, I can only really keep pothos house plants alive. Seriously. Nothing. Else.

what are you growing?

@Kristen - Mmm, zucchini. Are those tough to maintain? The plants, I mean? Because I LOVE zucchini - almost freakishly so. Sauteed in olive oil, dipped in baba ganoush? *Flavor explosion*

As for what we're growing, we're picking out plants tomorrow! But I think a variety of greens, cherry tomatoes, carrots, yellow squash (graciously supplied by Jennie Chen!), peppers. Basically, I want to make a salad.

That's Portulaca- evidently you managed to choose one of the more light-sensitive kinds of this flower, Tolly - some cultivars stay open better than others.

It's not a plant that will respond well to daily watering and deadheading (removing spent blossoms.

Don't get discouraged, please- gardening is fun!

What DOES this type of plant respond well to? Should I be giving it some special flower food, or something? (Do flowers "eat" food..?)

Sun, good drainage & reasonable water.

It's an annual, living for one year - don't usually make it through winter but sometimes reseed.

my zucchini wasn't hard to grow at all! in fact, it grew so big it took over the neighboring squash plant. our zucchinis were HUGE! seriously! of course, I couldn't help but make cracks about the zucchinis that had all the humor of a 10 year old boy. ;)

Start off simple. Beans. Peppers. Tomatoes next if ambitious but require more planning...but still time for fall tomatoes or even pumpkins (with room). I use containers since I great. Don't forget the compost. Good luck.
