So about the Bleet-Up ...

Cory Ryan photos of Bleet-Up #4, Whole Foods Downtown, December 2010

Last night, I was perusing old, delightful photos of 2010's Winter Bleet-Up.  (These five in particular are making my life.)  And, I thought it might be time to talk about why there haven't been any Bleet-Ups this year.

"Hey, Tolly!  When's the next Bleet-Up?" my friend Benn asked me yesterday.  To which I responded by looking down at my feet, and shuffling awkwardly.

He isn't the first to ask.  This past July, which would normally be the time when we held the "Summer Bleet-Up," our smaller, happy hour version, a couple of folks emailed and asked the same thing.  More came as we approached winter.  And to everybody, I've just been annoyingly vague and evasive.

(PS, if you have zero idea what I'm talking about right now and don't know what a "bleet-up" is, it's an annual blogger party.  A meet-up ... for bloggers.  Looking back, we could have picked a sexier name.  Anyway, here are pictures of me wearing huge sleeves in a variety of 80s and 90s Olan Mills portraits if you are bored.)

So here's the deal with all that.

After the last one in December, I started feeling like the Bleet-Ups had served their purpose.  Everybody does blogger meet-ups now, and while we (Richard and I) were hardly the first, I do feel like we played a role -- however small -- in solidifying the social media community here in Austin.  We threw our first one in summer 2009, and in just over two years, restaurants, boutiques, bars, local businesses, etc. have figured out the whole blogger get-together thing and do it so well now that I thought, you know what?  Bloggers get bombarded with enough stuff.  The Bleet-Up would just be superfluous at this point.

(Lately, I've come to the realization that bloggers may have attended and loved the Bleet-Up for a different reason ... but, more on that in a second.)

Also, this may come as a surprise, but I'm a terrible event planner.

It's true.  Everything always works out, but I get super-neurotic leading up to events, and went through this whole "no one cares!  No one'll come!" thing leading up to the last one.  That is why I always have to join forces with Richard, who is like a calm, steady rock.  He built a freaking stage for the last one, got lights and lasers for the bands, and all this other crazy stuff.  With a smile on his face.  Meanwhile, I finished all my little duties, but required a slight wine buzz at all times, and behaved like this nervous chicken in the days leading up to it, clucking around the house saying weird things to Ross, like, "goody bags.  We're supposed to have 20.  I count 19.  THE BLEET-UP IS RUINED."  I laid in bed the night before, and vibrated with anxiety.

So when the last one was done, I just ... sort of ... stopped.

Coupled with my first reason, that Bleet-up-esque things happen all the time in Austin now, I realized that I made myself too anxious planning them.  The big ones, at least, the ones with bands / food / drinks / pop-up shops / etc.  And I honestly thought that people would just forget about it.

Which is why I was so surprised, and touched, when all these people started asking about the Bleet-Up this year.

"You miss it??" I wanted to ask.  "Because I kinda miss it, too!"

(It's so funny to write about this, because in reality the Bleet-Up is only a big deal to a very specific group of people.  We're not talking Fun Fun Fun Fest here.  But to those people, it offered something kind of special.)

I think that people enjoy the Bleet-Up because:

A) It's an interesting group of people (bloggers are fascinating),

B) It's half-networking, half hanging out and drinking,

C) We did a book exchange once and that is just pure, clean, nerdy fun, and maybe most importantly:

D) It's other bloggers that are throwing it (rather than a restaurant or boutique.  Which, PS, I love those type of get-togethers too and attend frequently.  But it's different and nice when your peers host it.)

I'm so in awe of the #bashh folks, who have their shit capital-T together.  They throw one practically every month!  It's amazing.  Being at the November #bashh last night, it got me all excited to revive ye olde Bleet-Up now that we've basically taken a year off.  So, I've been toying with the idea of having one again, a SUPER casual one, in January.

My question to you is: Would you be into it?

Seriously.

The Austin blogging community is always a changing cast, so a part of me suspects that I may have been right about people forgetting it.  But even if that were the case, I'd be excited to meet a brand new crop of bloggers.  Also, there are Bleet-Up alums that are now kind of a big deal.  Take Diya in Her Stilettos, for example, who just hosted this huge, Marie Claire-sponsored fashion show last night!  Damn!

So it'd be neat to catch up with everyone again, hear about their new blogging ventures, and meet new folks.

Well, I think I've basically cheer-leaded myself back into the Bleet-Up now.  But I would really love to know/hear what you think.  Yes it'd be great or no, not necessary?

Happy Bleet-Up Day!

Oh I love you, Hipstamatic.

Tonight is the big night!! Richard and I are SO EXCITED to show you everything we've put together for this special occasion.  And I know you bloggers are pumped about Republic of Austin's Austin Blogger Awards, being presented tonight at The Bleet-Up too.

A few TIPS to ensure your Bleet-Up experience is absolutely grand:

1. Arrive early!  Doors are at 7:00pm.  Last year at Mohawk there were lines, and nobody likes lines. Plus...

2. Beer!  Live Oak Brewery will be there tonight.  And if you get there early you will be happy you did!  Early arrivals drink free beer 'til it runs out, then we switch over to cash bar ($3/cup).

3. BYOAwesome. This is the cool thing about partying on top of a grocery store. While our kegs and bands will say goodbye to you at 10:30pm, the party will continue long after that on the roof.  So if you'd like to grab a beer, a six-pack, a bottle of wine, etc. from the regular store part of WF and bring it upstairs to enjoy past 10:30, that is a-ok my friend.   Just grab it before store close -- 10:00 -- and you're all set.

PS. I think Whole Foods sells single-serve champagne in a pink can. If so I'm definitely getting it.

4. Have a BLAST. Seriously. Richard and I saw the Whole Foods terrace last night y'all, and it's ridonkulous. By which I mean, totally gorgeous and beautiful. We are so grateful to have Whole Foods host this for us!

I know my levels of enthusiasm are getting obnoxious at this point.  But really, it's so surreal to me that The Bleet-Up TONIGHT.  Totally cray cray!  You'll see many bloggers, blog readers out there, and friendly faces out there tonight, and here is a small sampling.

Come find me and say hi to me when you get there. I promise to be smiling.

see you tonight!

The Bleet-Up: Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto!

So, before I say anything.  Can we please take a moment to appreciate Styx, this song, and this video.

OH MY GOD. That is delightful.

I was searching for "Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto" today because it is my Happy Song and my You Can Do it! Song all rolled into one.  Ross played it on his ukulele for our 3-year-old nephew over Thanksgiving, and I sang the secret secret! I got a secret! parts.

Speaking of which. I want to thank you guys for your kind, candid, and often deeply personal comments on that post I wrote about my nephews and my psychosis about having babies of my own.  I am speechless?  It's encouraging to know I'm not the only one out there with some anxiety around this life stage.

And, it is SUPER encouraging to hear from you cool baby mommas and daddies who have been there, done that, and did it like a badass.

Speaking of badass.  (We're really going to town with these paragraph transitions today, aren't we?) Guess what is THIS FRIDAY.

 Um, I know.  I can't believe it's so soon!

Richard, my co-planner, wrote up a fantastically comprehensive post about The Bleet-Up, our party for bloggers and blog-readers, here.  Are you noting, and loving, his blog's new background?

That post gives you a rundown of all our goodies, but here are some more places you can go for info.

Facebook Event Page
Facebook Fan Page
Do512 Page (where they are holding a ticket giveaway for clicking "I Like It")

You're probably sick of hearing me talk about it by now, but let's just review three key details:

Prince cover band.

Ice skating rink that looks like Xanadu.

BATTER BLASTER Pancakes.

All of these will be yours at Bleet-Up, plus blogger love, lasers (I'm not kidding, there will be light lasers), and possibly Santa Clause.

Plus so very much more!  For just $7 entry.  So put on your party pants Austin, we'll see you Friday!

UPDATE: This just in! Ladies, we know how much you like to shred. So the totally rocking, totally awesome Ladies Rock Camp -- home of famed Girls Rock Camp -- will be at the Bleet-Up too, raffling off a free camp session. That's worth $250!  Just pick your raffle ticket up at the door ladies, and we'll announce a winner during the event.

I've secretly always wanted to do Ladies Rock Camp, so if you win it, we may be "campers" together. And how cool would that be?

The Bleet-Up: RSVP's now open!

Hooray!

RSVP's for The Bleet-Up are now open.  Because we love Whole Foods and respect their fire code, we'll close once we hit capacity.

And hey, speaking of The Bleet-Up, have you voted in the Austin Blogger Awards yet? They are being presented by Republic of Austin, and there are several fun categories: Blogger of the Year, Best Food Blog for Recipes, even Best Blog to find comments/discussion. Winners will be honored at The Bleet-Up!

Also -- warning. This is 100% off-topic and I'm sure plenty of you have seen it already. World, meet Janey Cutler, 80-year-old contestant on Britain's Got Talent.  This will make your day.  I cry every time I watch it.

Those three little words you long to hear: THE BLEET-UP

Attention bloggers, blog readers, and individuals who spend any length of time whatsoever behind a computer screen:

Do you suffer from mouse-clicking-induced finger soreness?  Do you feel frequent urges to walk away from your computer? Do you long to stop LOLing, and actually laugh out loud, with your fellow humans?

If so, you may be a candidate for a safe and proven treatment called The Bleet-Up.  The Bleet-Up is the natural way to boost real-life social interactions, and increase feelings of joy and connection.

Note: The Bleet-Up is to be administered with delicious food samples. The interaction of The Bleet-Up with alcohol enhances its side effects, namely: Partying, hugging, and potential photo-taking.

Some individuals may not be suitable for The Bleet-Up. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about partying and/or hugging. The Bleet-Up is available to adults of all ages, and studies have shown that participants in medical trials of The Bleet-Up have felt happier, more confident, and more excited about life following treatment.

CAN YOU GUYS TELL I'M EXCITED?  Because I'm very excited!!

Richard and I have been planning this one, Bleet-Up #4, for a little while now.  If you've never been to a Bleet-Up before, and are confused as to what I'm talking about, just click here.

"Bleet-up" stands for "blogger" + "meet-up," and we throw these parties twice a year.  The Summer one is small, the Fall one, which we are obviously promo-ing right now, is MUY GRANDE.

It's an opportunity for any blogger, blog reader, publicist who would like to know more bloggers, musicians who would like to meet music bloggers, restaurant/food cart operator who would like to meet food bloggers, designers who would like to meet fashion bloggers, or just plain people who like to par-tay to come hang out!

We are doing so much this year that I am pumped about. Chris Apollo of the famed Republic of Austin has teamed up with us to host the first-ever Austin Blogger Awards, with winners honored at The Bleet-Up.  Whole Foods, which is totally wheelchair accessible (kinda super important to me), has been so awesome in providing their gorgeous rooftop terrace.  Our triumphant party at Mohawk last year was exciting enough, but the fact that we will have an ICE SKATING RINK THIS YEAR?  Are you kidding me?!

So, you know what this means.  Until we launch the RSVP site in a few weeks, mark your calendars!  Please tell your friends, and "like" us on Facebook!  Please feel free to check back here or Ultra8201 for updates, as Richard and I will certainly have some later this month.

Speaking of which. I'd just like to publicly express my admiration of Richard, and my delight about having him as a co-planner. I told him last night that he was my Fairy Godfather, which is kind of like having magic, plus the Mafia, combined.  And I think you and I both know how serious that is.

Austin Bleet-Up: Blogger Smorgasbord!

I'm not gonna lie, people. This Bleet-Up photo booth got a little out of control.

Maybe because we were all so deliriously happy it didn't rain.

Maybe because Jennie Chen (from MisoHungry) brought a puppy!

Or, maybe, because our props included a coconut bra, Bon Jovi wig, and fake chest hair.

All of which bring out a different side in people!

which austin bloggers do you spot?

Pause. This is the crew from Kohana Coffee, who came and sampled their delicious Cold Brew at the Bleet-Up!

Event planner people, I'd like to strongly recommend this group for your next party.

Our folks were crazy about their coffee, and on top of that, Piper Jo - second from left, one of the co-founders of Kohana - is just really cool. When I got to Four Seasons, visibly flustered because I was 99% sure it was going to rain, she hugged me and said, "so what if it does? We'll party inside!"

It was exactly what I needed to hear.

By a singular miracle, it did not rain! But all the same, I really want to thank Four Seasons for graciously agreeing to do the whole event outdoors, even though the sky was threatening to open up and pour on us. The staff went out on a limb to accommodate our group, and speaking of the staff, they're extra fun to hang out with!

Heh. Here's a server I grabbed to take a picture with me. We're holding appetizer sausages.

More madness:

Flicktress Cory Ryan is a little bit magical, non?

Cory has the ability to make all of her subjects look so warm, energetic, and vibrant. I joke with her that since she was my wedding photographer (three years ago), she doesn't have a choice - she's stuck with me for LIFE! I don't plan parties that often, but when I do, she's my go-to gal for photo booths.

More glorious Bleet-Up pics here.

And finally, thank you to everyone who came to the Bleet-Up! It's a crime how much fun I have doing this.

Thank you, Candace Carlisle, for getting there early and calming me down. Thank you badass goodie bag sponsors, Snap Kitchen, TRIO, Austin Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, and more. Thank you weather, thank you glass(es) of wine, and most of all, thank you bloggers  for helping make our city the radass place it is.

You all are too fun!

I've got a secret.

And my secret is this: I wear a retainer each night when I sleep!

Aren't you happy you know that?

Anyway... my real secret is this:

the BLEET-UP is in two weeks!!

I was going to wait until the poster art was finished, but I'm so excited I can't hold it in any longer.

See, I have to admit something to you all. (This post is very confessional, non?)

Ever since the last Bleet-Up, I have steadily become less tech-addicted.

I am an average Tweeter. I don't have Twitter lists or anything. I'm a little too lazy to create a Facebook page for this blog. I've been going through this phase, or personal paradigm shift, or something, where I'm all about setting boundaries to my social media usage. Is that not strange, for a blogger to fear these tools? (Even texting! I'm considering disabling my phone's text messaging capabilities, just to see what it's like. Teach myself how to talk on the phone again.)

But leading up to that, things were different. For most of last year, I was all, TWITTER! Gimme!!

I - like many of you - jumped in, and in the process, discovered some awesome local blogs. Which I gobbled up by the handful.

So when we had the first Bleet-Up, I realized that my MOST favorite part about social media was meeting fellow bloggers in real life! Even more than stalking them online. During that first one, I met Seth Mazow, Year of the Pizza blogger. I met the man who ran that delightfully bizarre horror blog, the girl who turns beer and chocolate into cupcakes, and the woman who writes one of my favorite politics blogs, a blog I never had the guts to leave a comment on. (I still haven't. And I still love your blog, Betsy).

I got to talk to all of these people whose sites I read constantly, and that to me was a treat.

Some of you are really good at translating your social media connections into real-life connections. Me? I am so-so. The more time I spend with social media, the more I just end up feeling like I am better friends with my computer. But the Bleet-Up helps me meet you guys face-to-face, and you all are so funny / quirky / obsessive about very specific things! Like ME!

Last year, my friend/role model Rose Reyes said: "I've been to a lot of parties before, but the people here were so interesting. I just wanted to listen to everyone, for hours."

That's exactly how I feel. Bloggers are a special breed, because we ruminate over personal passions in a public forum. Sometimes, we wade around in our blogs for a long time before we figure just what exactly our passion IS. This trial-and-error process requires a lot of mental mining, which is why I typically find bloggers to be quite good conversationalists. We have a lot to say.

SO! Soapbox over, here are the details about our party:

the bleet-up
thursday, july 22
6:00-8:00pm
selected appetizers
happy hour wines by the glass
goodie bags for first 50 arrivals

Also, after that big long emotional post, would you believe what I have to tell you next? It's LIMIT 150 PEOPLE! NO! But yes. 150 is Trio's limit and we are respecting that, because they are wonderful in every way to us.

So know that you MUST RSVP to attend, and as soon as the RSVP site it up, I will post a link to it. I also have a couple other fun party details that I'll tell you about soon.

Note also that this is one of two Bleet-Up's that happen each year, and this summertime one is very much bloggers-among-bloggers. Low-key. The second one, the BIG one, happens right before Fun Fun Fun Fest, in November, with bands / drinks / food / ridiculousness / etc.

Because this blogger love-fest ain't a one-time deal, y'all.

PS: If you are new to this blog and have been wondering, "excuse me, what is a 'Bleet-Up?'" Here is the etymology:
Bloggers + meet-up = Bleet-Up

Caleb Does: Season 2, Episode 2: "Insensitive Much?"

Following yesterday's less-than-chirpy post, let's LAUGH a little, shall we?

For the uninitiated, Caleb Does is a show here in Austin made by two guys, Caleb and Emmett. (And by "guys" I mean "demi-gods.")  Season 1 took place between last summer and last fall, and was, straight-up, guerilla party reporting on Austin's little social scene.  All episodes are archived here and here, and unlike most event coverage, I can guarantee with 99.9% certainty that you'll want to squeeze this reporter and never let go.  And you haven't even seen the photographer, people.

In Season 2 the boys are taking a little departure...part murder mystery, part Law & Order, part fashionable walk-off.  You can watch Season 2, Episode 1 - which was filmed at the Bleet-Up! - here.  Below is the latest, Caleb Does Season 2, Episode 2: "Insensitive Much?"  Spot Kristin Owen, queen of Do512

Extra, extra! Austin Bleet-Up pics on the interwebs

Oh, Austin. Your inhabitants are too adorable for words.

Cory Ryan's pictures from last week's Austin Bleet-Up at Mohawk are now up on Flickr. Go have a looksie, yes? If you crave a hard copy - and I think you will - just order here.

Anyone who reads this blog is probably sick of hearing me talk about the Bleet-Up, so Austin Eavesdropper promises to shut up for the next few months. But not without saying:

Austin's community of bloggers + Twitterers + social media types = Massive joy to my heart

Thank you all SO much for coming to the Bleet-Up. When Richard and I started putting it together, we had a veeery loose game plan, but it was our incredible local businesses, bands, and of course bloggers/blog-readers who made this thing a reality. We've got more ideas for the Bleet-Up, both big and small, and welcome your feedback 100%. For now....let's eat up some pretty pictures.

PS: Austin360 / A-List got in on the picture action, too. Go see if you spot yourself!
