There's only one way to show the economy who's boss: Alcohol

I'm giggling at this story by Adam Geller at Associated Press, which ran in the Statesman today. He writes:

"In the past few weeks, scattered reports have noted that alcohol sales are up [...] The new figures have revived the thinking that when Americans are taking it on the economic chin, they keep a firm grip on the bottle."

I wonder if Austinites are immune to this trend or not. Overall, we are not a stressed-out people (see: Matthew McConaughey). But then, maybe it's a chicken-or-egg situation: Perhaps we are not stressed out precisely because we're already buzzed?

When I get anxious and annoying, I usually call my mom. Did I mention that I'm twelve? I know that many of you take your stress out in ways that don't involve your parents, though: A nice long run, a well-placed expletive to your fellow motorists, a feminine wash of tears (actually, can relate to all of these tactics too).

So here is my question, Austinites: Taxed by a bad economy or bad other circumstances, do you "comfort drink?"

I know the UT kids like to drink a lot, but for "townies" I think there is another substance of choice. :)

I saw that article too and had a good laugh--oh, what the AP is publishing! I definitely call my mom when stressed too ... drinking won't help stress, it exacerbates the situation!

have to agree...while i've only been graduated for 4 months, the ol' switcheroo has already taken place.

beer = tears.

All your coping techniques are quite familiar to me. I've been known to have a drink or two too many when stressed. My current stress cure...Chuy's (we just got one down south!). I can usually be cured by queso, boom boom enchiladas, & a couple swirl margaritas.

Stress and tension are just a part of my life, because I'm neurotic. I think about exercising, but am usually too comfortable on my couch to do anything about it. On those rare occasions I actually do any sort of physical activity, it's generally yoga, taking a brisk walk, or swimming.

But when you get down to brass tacks, a few glasses of red wine and a pizza are all I need. I did say "a pizza." As in: pizza comma whole.

I like to write and to run; thus, stress is needed to fuel both of these endeavors and to drink it away or wish it away would be detrimental to my lifestyle. However, who am I to say no to a glass of pinot at the end of a long day. . .

i don't comfort drink, or really drink too often. i write the songs. to cope.

not to be barry. well, kinda to be barry.

but i work in a liquor store and know that when the economy is in the tank people would rather save their money and drink at home than go out.

been selling lots of tequila to the homebodies lately.

Drinking alcohol in order to temporarily forget the effects of the current economic crisis, is a bad idea. It is because too much alcohol consumption can have serious effects to our health. If ever the reports are true, then American should realize that alcohol is not the solution to the problem.
