Public Service Announcement: Texas Social Media Awards

Actually, that's an inaccurate blog post title. It should really read, "Personal, Self-Serving Announcement." Are you ready?

So I was kindly nominated for a Texas Social Media Award, which is a new type of award, issued by the Austin American-Statesman. Now - first things first. I am ONLY JUST NOW becoming interwebs-savvy. This is the third blog I've operated, and my first two blogs sucked. (If you don't believe me, go mine Livejournal for my focusless first attempt at blogging, with riveting posts about graduate school applications, my favorite flavor latte at Starbucks, and a "10 Things About Me!" list. I know, doesn't it sound great?) I only hopped on the Facebook train within the last year, and more recently, I joined Twitter. This blog just recently celebrated it's first birthday! (And filed a name change last week!)

I used to be one of those people who held out on social networking sites, thinking they were cheap forms of socialization that were faddish and gimmicky. "Heh - 'Friendster.' Real clever. I'll stick to my friends in the real world, thanks." Oh my God, I could not have been more wrong. Whenever I meet someone now who doesn't have a Facebook account, I think....."omigod, what are you doing?!?!" I learn about 90% of what shows are happening here in town because of Facebook. I learned about JoeBidensTeeth.com on Twitter yesterday. I no longer think social networking sites are cheap, I think they're awesome. More than that: crucial. If you are a culturally-plugged in individual, nay, an individual at all, it behooves you to deftly navigate the interwebs via social media sites. The digital world doesn't replace our physical reality...it supplements our physical reality. At least that's how I like to think of it.

So, while I'm not the best at the interwebs - I'm only halfway certain I know what an RSS feed is? - I'm PUMPED to learn. I'm a convert, and I'm a believer. Austin American-Statesman is choosing their Texas Social Media Award winners based on....well I'm not sure exactly, but I do know that comments from people just like you are taken into consideration. So. If you read this blog and like it, wanna go leave a comment? I don't know what you get awarded if you win - a plaque? A neat little button for your blog? - but I've never been nominated for anything like this before and I'm motivated to campaign a little, because it's a cause I believe in! The interwebs = change we can believe in!

Back to our regularly scheduled programming - interview with vintage stylist Sarah Dean!! - after this.

I so agree with you on how you described the internet and how "it supplements our physical reality." i finally feel in "the know" semi. it just can be a lil addicting though.
